A Tree
Monica Hickey May

There lives in my garden a tree
Like no other—-weaned from Japan
Now her time has come to be
In tune with other surrounding trees
But none can compare to the blushing
Scarlet leaves that try to cling
To her branches until at last
The tree itself is stripped
Naked from those once sheltering branches.

Twisting and turning all the past year
Reveals the formation
Of two “lovers” deep in the ground
As they reach for those other
Wayward branches that are invited
To join them in spring to come.

Even trees have a secret love life.
